PLAYERS RETURN FOR PRE-SEASON TRAINING

Over the past three days the London Irish players have been reporting back to Sunbury for pre-season training.

Over the coming eight weeks the players will undergo a comprehensive programme of medical and fitness assessment and training under the direction of Gary Gold (Head Coach), Paul Hull (Assistant Coach) and Dirk Williams (Strength and Conditioning Coach).

The squad includes new signings Nick Greenstock and Phil Murphy, although Phil will be leaving shortly to join the Canadian World Cup team.

Of the players who finished last season on the injured list Kevin Burke is fully recovered; Justin Bishop and Rob Hoadley are progressing well under the care of Richard Mack and Andrew West.  Nick Burrows' knee injury will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.

The first schedule playing commitment for the players is the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham on Saturday, 16th August.  That will be followed on Friday, 22nd August by the Canterbury Cup, a challenge game between Narbonne and London Irish in the French city.

The squad will spend the following week in Ireland on a pre-season tour, the highlight of which will be games against Connacht in Galway on the 26th and against Ulster in Belfast on the 29th.

DIGGER PROMOTES RAIL SAFETY

Digger visited Hillside Primary School this week to help Network Rail to promote their summer safety scheme. The scheme involves rugby coaches visiting schools within the Reading and Wokingham area and introducing the children to the dangers of playing near railways. Rather than using the age old method of just telling the children not to do something, Network Rail has teamed up with the RFU and London Irish to give the children another choice of activity this summer by introducing them to Tag Rugby.

Jean Hooper, teacher at Hillside School and an avid London Irish ticket season holder comments, "We were more than happy to encourage the Netwok Rail initiative in our school as it not only promotes the safety of the pupils but it also provides them with a healthy alternative and chance to develop new skills."

Digger has been helping coaches Andy Keighley and Dave Pack introduce the game of tag rugby during the June/July school visits.  "Digger is a huge benefit to the scheme as he is recognised in all the schools we go into and the children take the safety message on board so much better," Dave Pack adds.

After their introductory session of tag rugby the children are invited to come along during the summer to several fun days (supported by London Irish) where they can develop their newly formed skills. The days are open to any child in school years five through to eight. To find out where your nearest Rugby Fun day is please visit the Network Rail Summer Safety Rugby Camps at www.rugbycamp.org

EXILES ADD EXTRA DATE FOR TOUCH RUGBY TOURNAMENTS

London Irish is delighted to announce that due to the overwhelming response to last week's announcement of the touch rugby festivals, another tournament will take place this September.

The venues are as follows:

Staines RFC - Sunday 7th September (from 1.30pm onwards)
Redingensians RFC - Wednesday 10th September (from 7pm onwards)
Ealing RFC - Sunday 14th September (from 1.30pm onwards).

The festivals are open to anyone over the age of 16 with the main emphasis being on fun and enjoyment in true Irish style!

GET TOGETHER WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND ENJOY THE FUN!

The festivals last a few hours and as well as some great touch rugby, there will be a BBQ (and beer!) for players and spectators alike. Why not enter a team with your friends from the pub, rugby club or work?  It's easy to enter as a team or as an Individual in any of the one day festivals, all you need to do is go to www.touchrugby.com and click the London Irish logo.

Once you have decided on what festival you want to enter, simply register your team by pressing "Register Now", complete the registration process and then select the tournament you want to enter.

All questions on both days can be answered by our partners at www.touchrugby.com.

TALES FROM THE CRAIC
Supplied by Lesley Wyatt (Stanmore)

A couple was celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, their domestic tranquility had long been the talk of the town. "What a peaceful and loving couple" was an often heard comment when their names came up in conversation.

A local newspaper reporter was inquiring as to the secret of their long and happy marriage. "Well it dates back to our honeymoon," explained the man.

"We visited the Grand Canyon and took a trip down to the bottom of the canyon on pack mules. We hadn't gone too far when my wife's dog stumbled. My wife quietly said, "That's once."  We proceeded a little further and the dog stumbled again. Once more my wife quietly said, "That's twice."  We hadn't gone a half-mile when the dog stumbled the third time. My wife quietly removed a revolver from her purse and shot the dog dead. I started an angry protest over her treatment of the dog , when she looked at me and quietly said, "That's once..."

"And we lived happily ever after..."
