RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS AT THE TOAST FESTIVAL
London Irish players took a break from their pre-season training programme to
participate in touch rugby matches at the TOAST Festival last weekend (July 10th/11th). The Exiles partnered with 'Canterbury of New Zealand' (Official Kit Sponsor) to join the festival, which was a celebration of Antipodean culture. Despite the weather, the rugby matches were the main attraction of the two days and gave people the opportunity to see the coming season's new recruits.
On Saturday, London Irish (in white) played against an experienced London New Zealand touch team where, after a promising start, the Exiles lost 3 tries to 1. Ross Laidlaw scored in the latter stages of the first half, however this was quickly cancelled out by the Kiwis where they proceeded to demonstrate their knowledge of the 'touch' version of the game and spent the majority of the second half camped in the Exiles' half, notching up an additional two tries to seal the game for London New Zealand.

London Irish & London New Zealand
Sunday saw the senior players face an Australian team featuring an array of talented touch players. Despite showing great ball handling skills, the Premiership side were unable to come away with a victory and lost 4-3 in the dying minutes of the match. Tries came from Mark Mapletoft, Geoff Appleford and an impressive 'show and go' from Australian-born David Paice.
Team: Appleford; Strudwick; Hodgson; Horak; Mapletoft; Paice; Roche; Wheatley

WOKINGHAM SCHOOLS TRIUMPH AT THAMES VALLEY YOUTH GAMES
Redingensians RFC's renowned community rugby program bore more fruit last weekend when the Wokingham team in the Mixed Tag Rugby at the Thames Valley Youth Games triumphed once again. The club works hard to promote tag rugby into local schools, and this is reflected in the large number of children in the club's mini rugby section and the number of schools that now play the game.
A combination of London Irish's Powergen program, the Active Sports program (delivered by Redingensians coaches), and tournaments and a league organised by the club means that there are an unrivalled number of coaching and playing opportunities for children in Wokingham District. This wide spread is reflected in the nine schools that had players in the squad of twelve at the Thames Valley Youth Games.

Redingensians coaches selected and trained the squad which went undefeated through the tournament, beating teams from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire on the way to the title. This success completes an unprecedented hat trick in the competition, following wins in 2002 and 2003.
