ARMITAGE AND THORPE SCORE AS ENGLAND UNDER 21s BEAT HOSTS
Scotland Under 21s 14 England Under 21s 25

England bounced back from their defeat by New Zealand last Friday to achieve Delon Armitagetheir first win in the IRB Under 21 World Championship with victory over Scotland at Netherdale last night. London Irish's Delon Armitage and Richard Thorpe scored tries and Armitage added two conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 12 points.

For much of the game the result rarely seemed in doubt as England gradually built up a winning margin that stretched to 16 points late in the second half before Scotland finally got into their stride.

England's heavier forwards did the damage, ruling the line-outs and showing good technique in the rolling mauls to wear down their opponents and win the battle of the back rows.

Scotland made it easier for England with three players receiving yellow cards during the game. England twice gained from Scotland's numerical disadvantage, scoring two of their three tries when their opponents were down to 14 men.

It was Scotland who struck first with a penalty Richard Thorpeby fullback Brian Archibald, a penalty by outside half Bradley Davies launched England's scoring. The real first half breakthrough however came after a period of sustained pressure that ended with full back Delon Armitage racing through the defence for the opening try.

Armitage converted and then added a penalty in reply to a further effort from Archibald to give England a half-time lead of 13-6.

Early in the second half a third Archibald penalty reduced England's lead but a try by Rees stretched the lead. Then from a driven line-out, new cap Richard Thorpe claimed the touchdown.

Thereafter, Scotland took control of the match and were rewarded with a try by outside-half Stephen Jones.
